Histopathology

Histopathology (which in some hospitals is also called cellular pathology) is an intellectually satisfying discipline. It deals with the tissue diagnosis of disease or it is the branch of medicine concerned with the changes in tissues caused by disease.

Histopathologist is the one who deals with the specimen from the biopsies, surgical resections and cytology samples. The diagnosis of this made by the histopathologist and can have an important bearing on clinical management.

The histopathologists are the one who look at tissues and cells removed from patients in the clinic or during an operation. How the hsitopathologist do the work? First, the tissue is examined with the naked eye to see for any visible abnormalities and to select pieces to examine in more detail. These small pieces are treated with chemicals so that very thin slices can be cut. The slices are stained to show different parts of the cells and examined under a microscope. The histopathologist tells the patient’s doctor what is wrong and often provides information about the correct treatment to give.

They must be attentive inorder to have a precise and accurate in examining of what diagnose will be given in a specific disease because many diseases look very similar, so being able to spot small differences is important. They should able to work under pressure and must mke a crtical decisions, thus they must be a critical thinker and must be good in interpretation of what they see under the microscope thus, they will able to determine what kind of disease the patient has.

Histopathologists must have a high level of self-motivation and be able to work both alone and as part of a team. Good communications skills are essential for discussing the relevance of microscopic findings with colleagues.
